I was excited when I received the news in April that I was accepted as a Flag Marshal for the 2019 Singapore Grand Prix; this was also my first overseas officiating stint. Before the event, I was already introduced to my sector mates and we shared knowledge with each other in preparation for the event.
September rolled around and I met up with my sector mates a few days before the event, they even brought me to try out some local specialities in the hawker centres. My sector has about 10 officials doing various roles, my Lead Flag Marshal Serene was very professional with her briefings. The flag point was something different to what I am used to back home. The cars looked amazing under the bright lights of the Marina Bay Street Circuit. Sometimes you could be mistaken for thinking it was actually daylight which shows how good the lights really are!
The weather was a tough factor to endure, and wearing an overall in 30plus degrees with humidity made it even tougher! Luckily, we had generous amounts of ice-cold water to keep us well hydrated.
As we finally got to Sunday all the officials came together for a group photoshoot and a touching tribute to the late Charlie Whiting by singing his favourite song “Summer of 69.”
I thoroughly enjoyed the Singapore Grand Prix. It is an amazing circuit and the Singaporeans were some of the most professional marshals I have worked with. Their attention to detail was amazing and is something that should be admired worldwide.
