Race Officials' Experience

My other family – Gabriel Tan, Clerk of the Course

I consider the volunteers my other “family” and each year I look forward to returning to the event, not so much for the racing but more for the camaraderie; to catch up with old and new friends and to work together with pride to achieve a successful event. Over the years, the race officials have evolved from a bunch of individuals into a cohesive and passionate family, with the single objective of hosting and managing the most atmospheric F1 race on the planet. To win the 2018 FIA Best Officials of the Season, beating many teams from all over the world, was the icing on the cake and a testimonial to the bonding that we developed over the years. But as they say, “To achieve is easy, to maintain is hard”. But I have no doubt that we will always rise to the challenge, we always have and we always will. We dedicated the 2019 event to the late F1 Race Director Charlie Whiting and, boy, did we put up a good race. He would have been so proud of us, I know I was.
